INTRODUCTION
In recent times there has been serious global deterioration of the environment as a result of human and natural activities. For instance, in Nigeria, there is a serious problem of deforestation, pesticide abuse, oil spoilage and destruction of cultural heritage. This has led to the disappearance of many species and cultural materials while a host of others are endangered. This calls for a focus on conservation studies.
Conservation is the science of preserving an object or environment for posterity as near as possible to its original form or state which involves saving as much of the original as is practicable and where part of it has been destroyed beyond; possible salvaging, replacing it with something more appropriate which can be as closely as possible, identical to the original. For the M.Sc. Conservation Science Programme, the scope will include the preservation of plant, animal, rock and cultural materials which are threatened by human activities and which are of crucial value to the present and future environments.
Conservation is so important that it should be a major component of the programmes of all organisations that deal with land and natural resources. It is important to take right measures through enhanced knowledge and understanding of the environment to be able to preserve it. Furthermore, we must know the influence of the property or the agents that are causing the destruction of the material or environment to be able to influence its conservation
the Natural History Museum is an in-situ and ex-situ conservation centre which makes it sufficiently suited for the teaching of courses in conservation. It has a formidable staff in different disciplines of Botany, Zoology, Geology and Archaeology with vast experiences in the area.
The target groups for this course are staff of all Industries, Forestry, Research Institutes, Federal and State Ministries of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Environmental Agencies and Universities.
