NYSC WORKSHOP

A major strategy of awakening the psyche of Nigerians to the appreciation and usage of emerging technologies is through the organization of sectoral workshops and conferences. Such Workshops/Conferences include those held for decision makers in the public sector, security and law enforcement agents, judiciary, private sectors, etc.

The flagship of such awareness strategy is the e-Nigeria conference which is a forum that serves to raise awareness at the highest level of government, build knowledge and encourage competence on how to use the newly emerging technologies and development for the benefit of good governance, trade and sustainable economic growth. It incorporates three main inter-dependent functions of high level conference, interactive workshop and vibrant exhibition.

LOCAL CONTENT

Tthe quality of service rendered by local practitioners in Nigeria inherently appears non cost effective and substandard .
ILLUSTRATION
Mr. A buys a new car which one day develops a minor problem. He immediately approaches his popular mechanic to fix this fault.
The local mechanic promptly commences
repairs after agreement had been reached on payment charges.
The local mechanic eventually completes the job, test runs the car and convinces Mr. A that the fault had been fully rectified
Mr. A believes this and happily pays the full sum as agreed.
However to the chagrin of Mr. A, since
that time, it had been visits to the local technician.Reason: Mr. A’s car began developing ‘mysterious’ problems demanding mechanical attention.

The major deliverables of this is the promotion of IT diffusion, utilization and applications within and across all sectors of the national economy

In continuation with this trend, COPINE in collaboration with Classic Systems InfoTech, (A privately owned computer acquisition centre) organized a one day IT Workshop for the 2007 National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Members drafted to Osun state. This workshop is a single phase out of others billed to come.

The theme was That You May Use I.T : Empowering The Nigerian Youth Corps Members For National Development.

A second stage of the Workshop (as at the time of this compilation) is slated for the tenth day of may, 2007. The venue is Conference Centre,Obafemi Awolowo University Campus.

Activities like these are critically strategic to economic and national survival in so much that even the Federal Government recognizes the unprecedented tools and facilities offered by the IT in view of convergence, globalization and the information Age; the administration is committed to ensuring that Nigeria is truly part of the global information society.

It is known that the current administration is further exploiting the opportunities offered by the IT to finalize the implementation many of its various strategic programmes in order to improve the welfare of the people from the village level to the urban mega centers. The administration is hitherto trying to reduce the gap created by the Digital Divide and strive to close the gap between the “haves and have-nots”.

In view of these projections, The Federal Ministry of Science and Technology, which was mandated through Cooperative Information Network (COPINE) to organize a workshop of IT Stakeholders from the Public and Private sectors on National Information and Communication Infrastructures, Policy, Plans and Strategies.

To be continued

  1. Do you think this occurrence of repeated visits to
his mechanic was a form of coincidence?
  2. Are local technicians in Nigeria fit for our local demands?
  3. Could there be a proper regulation of local standards
(like NAFDAC) set up to tackle consumer related
    issues
  4. Is it necessary that the Nigerian Consumer be
    given a voice?
