Books |
The book is a compilation of the papers presented at the three day National Conference held in Lagos organized by the Centre for Gender and Social Policy Studies in March 1999 on Poverty, Research and Policy Directions in Nigeria. The conference reviewed and evaluated the current state of poverty, the methodologies for poverty assessment and policies for poverty reduction in Nigeria. The conference also identified research priorities on poverty in Nigeria in order to propose appropriate poverty reduction strategies, theoretical and methodological guidelines. The conference served as a forum for networking among agencies/organizations, and researchers involved and interested in poverty in Nigeria.

Abstracts
This research project examines gender differentials in access to and control of land and housing in the city of Ibadan. Using structured interviews, in-depth interviews and focus group discussions, the study documented gender disparities and access to land and housing. Generally, in male household heads have better access to loans, making them more of owners of the land and occupied homes. The impact of ‘class’ was very apparent as ‘female heads’ of lower class households were the most disadvantaged of the groups studied. Two factors accounted for this disparity: (i) the lower socio-economic status of women, (also conceptualized in terms of poverty); and (ii) adverse socio-cultural norms and practices.

Background
It is now widely acknowledged that women around the world benefited from significant improvements in health, work, and education in the last few decades. This is demonstrated by an increase in their life expectancy from 49 years in the 1950s to 68 years. This progress was attributed in part, to the growing awareness that global social and economic developments depend largely on improving opportunities available to and enjoyed by women to fully participate in society.
