This is a major function of all academic staff members in the University. This category of staff is expected to do meaningful research that can advance knowledge and through its application, enhance economic development. Career advancement for academic staff is also determined to a great extent by the quantity and quality of their research output.

The Departments in the Faculty have engaged in numerous studies that have addressed various social, economic, scientific and cultural problems confronting the country.

Some of the avenues opened for academic staff development in our University system are the various training and retraining arrangements made possible through study leave, sabbatical leave, attendance at learned conferences, seminars, workshops, etc. For example academic staff were trained and empowered academically to the level of Ph.D in house and in other high-ranking universities outside the country. The academic staff go on sabbatical level periodically (every 6 years) to be able to interact with scholars in other parts of the world so as to do research and teaching in a different environment from his/her own and to have collaborations with his/her peers in other Universities. Attendance at learned conferences, seminars and workshops also creates the opportunity for every academic to interact with professional colleagues in his field. Another avenue for staff development is the academic mentoring of the younger colleagues by the older ones.

An average of 85 local conferences and 42 international conferences/workshops

per session were attended by Faculty staff during the past five years
