ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

UNDERGRADUATE

The UME requirements for the Department of political science are the same as those for other undergraduate programmes in the Faculty of Social Sciences.

  • Candidates for the degree programme must have a Senior Secondary School Certificate or General Certificate of Education or their equivalent with at least five credit passes including Government, English and Mathematics in not more than two sittings.
  • Candidates must have acceptable passes in the University Matriculation Examination (U.M.E.)

Candidates for direct entry must:

  • Satisfy the admission requirement for admission to the university as specified above, and
  • Two 'A. Level' passes including Government or History.

REQUIREMENTS FOR A DEGREE

To be eligible for the degree of B.Sc. (Social Sciences ) in Political Science, candidates must have taken and passed approved compulsory and elective courses. An optional course may be taken by a student, but could be substituted for another. It is possible for a candidate to exceed the stated minimum number of units by selecting courses of his choice, provided that prior approval of the Head of Department (or his chosen representative) is obtained.

  • For students admitted through university Matriculation Examination (UME) the minimum requirement is 150 units for students of Political Science and 142 for students of PPE(Politics, Philosophy and Economics).
  • For Direct Entry Students, the minimum requirement is 126 units.

GENERAL STUDIES: 12 units of special electives, outside the Faculty of Social Sciences.

POSTGRADUATE

  • M.P.S. (with Long Essay) and M.Sc. (with Thesis)
    Admission to the M.P.S. and M.Sc. degree programmes is normally open to candidates with at least a second class honours degree in Political Science of the Obafemi Awolowo University or any other recognized university. Candidates in related fields with some background in Political Science may also be considered on the academic training and performance.
  • Ph.D. Degree
    The normal qualification for admission into the Ph.D. programme is an M.Sc. with thesis degree of the Obafemi Awolowo University, with an aggregate of B+ or its equivalent from any recognized university. of independence of thought and representing an original contribution to knowledge. The thesis, which must also demonstrate ability to collect data and analyse them using the most up to date techniques, should be in accordance with University Regulations. All Ph.D. candidates must, in the course of preparing their theses, attend seminars and occasionally present papers which represent progress report on their work. Any candidates who, of B+ average in the M.Sc. with thesis level, is adjudged to be deficient in any or some area(s) of political science will be expected to offer and pass remedial courses at the M.Sc. level and/or other written examinations that may be prescribed by the Department before being allowed to present himself/herself for the oral Ph.D. qualifying examination. The registration, studentship and candidature of a Ph.D. student shall be in accordance with University Regulations.
