A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT

The Department of Geography was one of the foundation departments of this University in 1962. The department was initially awarding B.A degree but transferred to the faculty of Social Sciences in 1968 when it changed to awarding B.Sc. programme.                                                    

 Over the years, the department had grown very rapidly and now has a total of sixteen members of academic staff at all the grades.

 The curriculum had been reviewed several times to reflect changing developmental needs of the country. All the courses contents are oriented towards a solid theoretical background and the solution of practical problems especially in the area of spatial planning, management of environmental resources and information technology.

 The department has recently incorporated courses in Geographical Information System (GIS) and Remote Sensing  to better equip students with suitable analytical and technical skills required in these areas making their students relevant to national development and international standard.

The main objective of the academic programme of the department is to produce world-class geographer who can make effective contribution to national development particularly in the area of spatial planning and information technology. The specific objectives are to:
