The Department has a track record of high quality research. A substantial part of the research data by the current and past academic members of staff have been published in highly reputable international journals as well as local journals of international repute. These staff have endeavoured to distinguish themselves as high-calibre researchers in their various disciplines.

  • Seismic Reservoir Signal Monitoring Team

  • The Electromagnetic Team

  • The Basin Analysis and Petroleum Geology Group

  • Hydro- & and Engineering Geological Monitoring Team

  • Petrology, Geochemistry and Mineral Exploration Team

  • The Department has contributed to the erection of a Revised Stratigraphic Table for the country,
  • New findings emanating from research activities in the Department have led to the further elucidation of the geology of the petroleum-bearing Niger Delta.

Community Services

In order to be useful to the community at various levels, supplement the subvention from the University and expose our students to professional practice, the Department has endeavoured for the past 30 years to engage in consultancy services. In this regard several key projects have been successfully undertaken.  Some prominent ones among these are:

  • Geotechnical/geological investigation of the Bituminous sand deposits of Ondo State, Nigeria,

  • Interpretation of the Gravity/Magnetic Data over the Niger Delta,

  • Biostratigraphic, Seismic Stratigraphic and Sequence Stratigraphic

  • Analyses of various Niger Delta well samples for major oil and service companies.

  • Interpretation of the Gravity/Magnetic Data over the Chad Basin, Nigeria
