The Department of Geology runs undergraduate degree programmes in
Geology
and
Applied Geophysics
and postgraduate degree programmes in four distinct options:
Sedimentary and Petroleum Geology, Applied
Geophysics, Geochemistry and Mineral Exploration, and Engineering
Geology and Hydrogeology.
It is thus essentially several departments in one.
The Department ran a B. Sc. Geology degree programme until
the 1974 / 1975 academic year when the B. Sc. Applied Geophysics degree
programme was introduced. Our Department was the first to introduce the
undergraduate (i.e. B. Sc.) Applied Geophysics programme in Nigeria. In the
same year (i.e. 1974), under the dynamic leadership of Professor Olúwafèyísọlá
Sylvester Adégòkè, the then Head, the Department introduced
three M. Sc. Applied Geology degree programmes [in Sedimentary and
Petroleum Geology, Geochemistry and Mineral Exploration,
and Hydrogeology and Engineering Geology]. It subsequently introduced
the M. Sc. Applied Geophysics degree and M. Phil. and Ph. D.
Degree programmes in Applied Geology and Applied Geophysics.
Since its establishment some forty years ago, the Department has graduated
over 1000 students at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Today, these
graduates occupy key positions in the solid minerals, petroleum (oil and
gas), environmental, hydrogeological and other sectors of the
Nigerian economy, including politics and the academia. |
