
| Admission Requirements for Undergraduate Studies
University Matriculation Examination (UME) Students intending to read for the B.Sc. degree in Biochemistry must have at least five credits in the Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSSCE) including English, Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics and Biology. For the UME, candidates are required to answer questions in Chemistry, Physics and either Biology or Mathematics in addition to English Language. Direct Entry Candidates who, in addition to the five relevant credit passes at SSSCE or “O” level, have passed with a satisfactory grade at “A” level in Chemistry and in one of Physics, Mathematics and Biology, may be considered for exemption from equivalent courses in the programme and will be credited with the units for such courses. Admission Requirements for Graduate Studies General Requirements M.Sc Degree Candidates registering for an M.Sc degree must be prepared to pursue a course of a minimum of 12 months duration. The M.Sc degree programme is open to candidates holding at least a Second class lower degree in Biochemistry, or in a field closely related to Biochemistry such as Chemistry, Pharmacy, Medicine, Agriculture, Food science or Biology. Any candidate particularly non-Biochemistry majors, may be required to take remedial courses without credit, when recommended to do so by the Head of Department. In some cases a longer study programme may be necessary. Ph.D Degree The Ph.D. Degree Programme is open to candidates with an M.Sc with thesis, M. Phil Degree in Biochemistry. In special cases, candidates qualified in fields very related to or overlapping areas of Biochemistry e.g. Microbiology, Chemical Engineering or Clinical Biochemistry will be admitted. In the latter cases, the candidate may be required to take supplementary courses without credit. |
