Founded in 1962 as a Department of Pharmacy within the Faculty of Science, it is the premier institution to provide pharmacy education in Nigeria. A very large percent of Nigerian pharmacists working in the country and abroad are graduates of this University (formerly called University of Ife). With the demand of this noble profession coupled with perception of its tremendous contribution to our society, the department was upgraded to a full-fledged Faculty in 1969, with four main departments: Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Pharmacology, Pharmacognosy, and Pharmaceutics. Over the period of growth and development of the Faculty, a Drug Research and Production Unit, and an additional department - Clinical Pharmacy and Pharmacy Administration were established to consolidate the various efforts on teaching, research and service in the Faculty. In addition, the faculty utilizes affiliated hospitals, health care clinics and pharmaceutical industries in the country for its in-term clinical and experiential programmes.

The Faculty has cultivated a strong tradition of scientific research and of late, continuing education to pharmacy practitioners. There are fully established postgraduate programmes awarding M.Sc. M.Phil and PhD degrees in the departments. The staff and postgraduate students are actively engaged in research, with activities in all major areas of pharmacy and the pharmaceutical sciences.  Research funds are obtained from government and private sources and we also have collaborative research programmes with several research groups in various countries.

This Faculty has been serving as a model for other pharmacy schools throughout the country. Our mission is to seek and promote excellence in teaching, research and scholarship and produce highly-skilled pharmacists who deliver quality pharmaceutical care to the people of Nigeria and beyond. This mission is carried out based on certain fundamental values. We cherish the values of inquiring attitudes and ability to solve problems, continuous improvement and learning in pharmacy, community partnerships, standards consonant with a premier status, and most importantly, excellence in teaching and scholarship by students and staff.
