DRPU becomes TWAS-UNESCO Associateship Scheme Centre of Excellence
The Third World Academy of Sciences in cooperation with UNESCO instituted a joint Associateship Scheme with Centres of Excellence in the South to enable active researchers from the South to visit these centres regularly for research activities. The aim of the scheme is to counteract the brain drain by alleviating the problem of isolation of talented scientists in developing countries, and strengthen the research programmes of Centres of Excellence in the South. Within this scheme, two associates will be selected for the DRPU from among the most eminent and promising researchers in developing countries, working in the fields of interest of the DRPU this year. The application is on, and selection will be made by TWAS. The appointment will be made on the basis of merit. The appointment will be made for a fixed period of three years, during which the associate is entitled to visit the Centre twice for a period of two to three months each time. The scheme is supported by a grant provided by UNESCO and the Departimento per la Cooperazion allo Sviluppo of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

LINKAGES

The Unit has established linkages with the University of Durban, South Africa, ILRI, Nairobi, School of Pharmacy, University of London and the University of Yaounde, Cameroon. Linkage with Nigerian Trypanosomisis Research Institute, Kaduna on trypanocidal plants has been made. The prospects for active linkage with other Centres of excellence in the South and the North are being explored. Western Africa Network of Natural Products Research Scientists (WANNPRES) council member The signing of the frame agreement between the Drug Research and Production Unit, Obafemi Awolowo University and the School of Chemistry University of Kwazulu –Natal South Africa is in progress. Collaboration between the Unit and some Institutions in Europe are in progress.
