PROJECTIONS FOR THE COMING YEAR

The Unit will want to go into commercial production of some drugs. However, some of the equipment in the Unit such as UV, Polygraph, microscope rotary evaporators, ovens, pumps, incubators are either obsolete or have broken down.

Lack of adequate funds to prosecute our programmes.
Audit of Manufacturing facilities.

  1. Liquid Line
    The following items of equipment are in good order for the production and liquid pharmaceuticals:
    • Silverson mixer (Silverson, Chesam Bucks, England).
    • Stainless Steel Tanks 3 x 120L
    The required items of equipment for patient packs of liquid pharmaceuticals are:
    • Filling machine (single nozzle) N400,000.00
    • Capping machine (single head) N400,000.00
    • Two (2) addition stainless steel tanks - N200,000.00
  2. Solid Line
    The following items of equipment are available and are in good order for the manufacture of solid pharmaceuticals (powders, granules and tablets):
    • Hobert Mixer (Hobert, U.K.).
    • Manesty Fitzmill (Manesty, U.K.)
    • Apex V-blender
    • Manesty fluid bed dryer
    • Hot Air Oven (Derkelmann, Germany).
    • Manesty Betapress 16 Station Rotary Tableting Machine (Manesty, U.K.) (very old).
  3. Dispensary Machines
    These balances are available and in good order for weighing:
    • Avery Top leading scale (Avery, Birmingham, England).
    • Avery weighing balance.
    The required additional items of equipment for liquid pharmaceuticals are:
    • Set of sand bed filter, carbon filter and deionizing bed, Bacterial proof filters (5m, 2m and 0.2m in series) and U.V. sterilizing unit for pharmaceutical grade water processing (N800,000.00).
    • Departmental based U.V. Spectrophotometer for routine analysis of raw materials, in-process and finished pharmaceuticals (N1,200,000.00).
    • pH meter (N120,000.00).

PLANS FOR THE FUTURE

  1. The Unit will develop her extension services so that it can be easily recognized for research and public service.
    • Set up facilities for biological testing: The Unit has developed a proposal for tissue culture laboratory which is expected to screen hundreds of extracts/compounds within a short period.
    • Set up facilities for the standardization of herbal preparations.
    • Improve our training programmes for herbalists through organized workshops/lecture such as our Training Programmes for Herbalists and Herbal Practitioners, which started in September 1999.
    • Improve on her consultancy services.
    • Make moves to set up a strong relations unit for an effective promotion of her efforts in drug research and production outside the University.
  2. Higher degrees - M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Phytomedicines. More students will be recruited for this programme. The research programmes are designed to meet the long-felt demand for training, and up-dating the skills and expertise of herbalists and scientists involved in herbal research. It is our belief that such programmes will meet the increasing demands for specialists needed for research and development of natural products, and those needed for public organizations such
