It is pleasure to welcome you most sincerely to
the Home Pages of the Department of Urban
and Regional Planning,
Faculty of Environmental Design and Management,
Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife,
Osun State, Nigeria.
The Department evolved into a full one in 1981.
It was one of the five departments, which
became the Faculty of EDM on April 6, 1982.

The Department offered the first (Urban and Regional Planning) programme at the undergraduate level in the country. It is one of the very few departments of (URP), which have full Nigerian Institute of Town Planners/Town Planners Registration Council’s Accreditation for their undergraduate and M.Sc. programmes at the University level in Nigeria.

It has contributed immensely to urban and regional planning education in Nigeria. The Department has also been offering Ph.D. degree programme in the different areas of URP for some two decades. These include transportation, housing, regional planning, solid waste management, industrial location, infrastructure facilities, rural development and urban design, amongst others. Research has been carried out and is still going on in the different areas.

The graduates of this department have distinguished themselves in their chosen careers and they are holding important professional and managerial positions in public and private organizations nationally and internationally.

The department is proposing post-graduate programmes, which have been processed to an advance stage. These include four short term professional post-graduate Diploma and M.Phil. Programmes.

The Diploma programmes are:

  • Post-Graduate Diploma in Planning Processes (PGDPP)
  • Post-Graduate Diploma in Transportation Planning (PGDTP)
  • Post-Graduate Diploma in Housing and Urban Renewal Processes (PGDHURP)
  • Post-Graduate Diploma in Landscape Planning (PGDLP).

These programmes are to provide intensive training and refresher courses for professionals in planning establishments. The M.Phil. programmes is to promote capacity building in relation to the development of Planning Education. It is geared towards the training of the category of candidates who intend to pursue the doctoral programme.
