INTRODUCTION
The Department of Architecture recognizes the need to provide opportunities for holders of the first degree in Architecture to specialize in some aspect of the discipline in relation to the demands of their chosen profession. This need falls into three main categories. They include, the need to build upon the first degree which deals with the general Art and Science of Architecture with a view to exposing candidates to the central concerns of Architecture in depth and focus; the need in occupations which demand depth of knowledge and research skills in a specific area of the discipline such as for example, Housing; and the need to train academics and other researchers.
The Department therefore offers Postgraduate programmes leading to the award of Postgraduate Diploma in Architectural Conservation (PGDAC), Postgraduate Diploma in Architectural Design and Practice (PGDADP), Master of Architecture (M.Arch.), Master of Science (M.Sc. Architecture), Master of Philosophy (M.Phil. Architecture), and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D. Architecture), respectively.
The programmes are structured in four main modules representing the major areas of research identified within the Department. These are; Housing and Urban Studies History and Theory of Architecture, Architectural Science, and Architectural Design and Production.
RATIONALE FOR THE DEGREES OFFERED The two Postgraduate Diploma courses are designed to address relevant areas of the discipline for which target groups have been identified. They include those who work in Institutions and Establishments, which deal with the Conservation of Cultural Heritage and those architects whose duties require depth of knowledge in programming and the organization of the building delivery process.
The Master of Architecture is a terminal degree, which compliments the Bachelor of Science in Architecture programme and completes the formal professional training.
The M.Sc., M.Phil and Ph.D. are entirely by course work and research thesis and are aimed at those who wish to acquire research skill and deepen knowledge in a focused area of the discipline.
The new programme is generally more relevant and has specific target groups and foci within Architecture. It will enhance capacity building in academic and professional sectors of the discipline
In particular it will allow for the training of academic staff in a more systematic and focused approach
