Part 1 CLI 430 General and Cellular Pathology
Lectures: Mondays 4-6pm

 

1. Introduction to pathology. Pathophysiology and pathogenesis. Introduction to Morbid Anatomy. The role of Morbid Anatomy in clinical medicine.

2. The normal cell: structure and function. The concept of homeostasis. Cellular injury: Agents, Mechanism and Types of cellular injury. Cellular adaptation to sublethal injury. Cell death: Necrosis. Types of necrosis and their anatomic sequelae. Apoptosis.

3. Acute inflammation 1: causes and cardinal signs. The cellular and vascular events. The disorders of acute inflammation.

4. Acute inflammation II: The chemical mediators of acute inflammation.

5. Chronic inflammation: causes, morphological types. Mediators of chronic
inflammation. Wound healing and tissue repair. Tissue regeneration.

6. The cell cycle and its disorders: hypertrophy, hyperplasia . dysplasia.

7. The pathological basis of ischaemia, and infarction. Thrombosis and embolism. The pathology of shock.

8. Basic immunopathology1: The organization of the immune system. Immune deficiency disease. The pathology of AIDS.
9. Basic immunopathology II: Hypersensitivity. Autoimmunity. Amyloidosis.

10. Neoplasia 1: Nomenclature of tumours. Characteristics and systemic effects of
malignant tumours. Paraneoplastic syndromes.

11. Neoplasia II: carcinogenesis.

12. Heterotopic calcification. Chromosomal and genetic diseases, an overview.

13. In-course assessment.

Part II CLI 430 Systemic Pathology

1. Diseases of the Respiratory Tract 10 hours.

2. Diseases of the Cardiovascular System 10 hours.

3. Diseases of the Alimentary System 10 hours.

4. Diseases of the Mononuclear Phagocyte System 6 hours.

5. Diseases of the Female Reproductive System

6. Diseases of the Male Reproductive System (5 & 6) 12 hours.

7. Diseases of the Kidneys and Urological System 10 hours

8. Revision classes 10 hours.

9. In-course assessment 3 hours.
