The Department of Music was established in 1976 for the purpose of offering courses leading to the award of the B.A. (honors) degree in Music with emphasis on both European and African Music. Since its inception, the Department had supplied and had continued to supply well qualified Music Graduates to meet the various demands of our Institutions of learning (Primary, Secondary and Tertiary), Radio Broadcasting and Television Stations, Ministries of Education, Cultural Centers, Armed Forces (Police, Army, Navy, and Air force), Recording Industries, Social Organizations and the general public.
Two consecutive quinquenial development Plans 1980 – 1985 and 1986 – 1990 saw the Department consolidating its programme, expanding its facilities (both physical and instructional) and embarking on a Postgraduate {Programme)
The programme, which is externally examined, had its first graduates in 1982. In 1990, the programme produced its first 1st Class Honours graduate in Music. In 1991, the programme was revised in accordance with the Nigerian University Commission [NUC] Minimal Standards Guidelines.
During the 1990/91 Session, the Department commenced Postgraduate Programmes in Music leading to the award of Master of Arts (Music) and in 1999/2000 academic session the Department started its Doctoral Degree programme in music.
Presently, the Department has three standing performing groups – the University Choir, University Band and the University African Music and Dance Ensemble, all of which provide avenues for students’ professional training and development in Music as well as servicing the social and cultural needs of the community.
