The objectives of the Department of Foreign Languages are:
To teach Foreign Languages and Literatures that are important to the cultural, intellectual and political evolution of Nigeria.
To initiate and carry out research in these languages and literatures
To teach and initiate research in African Literature written in these languages.
To train students to acquire fluency in oral communication in the foreign languages taught.
To enable students to acquire competence in written communication.
To develop students' ability to translate and interpret basic texts related to real life situations and problems.
To expose students to various concepts of literary criticism in order to sharpen their critical skills for a deeper understanding of literary texts.
The essential areas of interest are:
French Language and Literature.
German Language and Literature.
Portuguese Language and Literature.
Comparative Literature (French/German/Portuguese/English).
African Literature in French/Portuguese/German.
