The Department of Dramatic Arts came into being upon the dissolution of the Institute of African Studies unit of the University in 1977. The primary objective of the Department was and remains the training of students towards academic scholarship and professional versatility in the various areas of theatre and media arts.
First under the headship of Professor Ola Rotimi and, thereafter, Professor Wole Soyinka, the Department graduated its first batch of B.A. (Single Honours) Dramatic Arts Degree holders in 1981, with one of the premier graduates obtaining a First Class Degree. In addition to the B.A. Dramatic Arts Degree Programme, the Department also had a one-year Certificate in Dramatic Arts (C.D.A.) Programme, which it started in the 1977 / 78 academic year. By the time the university phased out the programme in 1999, over 1000 obtained the certificate and are in professional practice all over the country.
During the 2001 / 2002 academic year, and with the approval of the university, the Department has put up a Two-year Diploma Programme. The Programme is designed to enable holders of the Diploma gain admission by Direct Entry into the B.A. (Hons.) Programme or, in lieu of this, take up middle-cadre professional appointment in the various areas of theatre, and media arts practice or set up private practice. In 1997 / 98 academic year, the Department reviewed its Degree Programme in order to place in good stead its graduands in view of the changing demands of the professional job market.
In the 2001 / 2002 year, the Department drew up and processed for the approval of the Senate, a Postgraduate Diploma in Dramatic Arts (PDDA); Master of Arts (M.A.); Master of Philosophy (M. Phil.); Master of Fine Arts (MFA); Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.).
In all, over the years, the Department has produced Academically and Professionally well-trained graduates who have been well-equipped to organize their own Theatre and Video production companies or gain employment in various capacities in Radio and Television Corporations, Video/Film making companies, Arts Councils, the National Theatre, Newspaper establishments, Advertising outfits and the Academic world.
