LIVESTOCK RESEARCH FOR DEVELOPMENT

 

Livestock Research for Development is a research & discussion group consisting largely

of interested academic staff and all graduate students in the Department of Animal Science. The cardinal objective is to review contemporary issues in livestock research for development.

 

Background :

Much of Sub-Saharan Africa continues to be plagued by problems of extreme

poverty. Research & Development efforts through the promotion of sustainable smallholder livestock production have been identified as a major avenue worthy of exploitation. There is the need for current training of graduate students needs to prepare them to face contemporary challenges of poverty and food insecurity.

 

Goals :

•  Discuss papers on livestock research with developmental focus,

• Review success cases where livestock production have been used as tools for development

•  Paper presentations by members on topical issues related to livestock production under smallholder units as tools for development

•  Develop grantsmanship skills in proposal related to R&D, with emphasis on the expectations of grants providers,

•  Contribute to the training of graduate students in contemporary issues in R&D

•  Develop a client-based approach to research for development, that addresses urgent critical societal issues relating to poverty and food insecurity
