THE VIRTUAL CLASSROOM: TO BE OR NOT TO BE

The virtual Classroom (an Educational interactive CD) is a product of many months of careful research and deliberation on how a single CD can be loaded with a program that will be suitable for conveying lectures and administering tests with the use of texts, video, graphics, animation and sound, is adequately structured to serve as the perfect alternative to classroom lectures.

The first version is tailored after Chemistry 101(Introductory Physical Chemistry) and is packaged with some features like:

•  A virtual Classroom

•  A virtual test room

•  A glossary section

•  A Real-time feedback system

•  Illustrations with animations, graphics, images, videos, sound etc

•  An autorun facility and lots more..

The demo however, does not completely reflect all that is possible.

FUTURE?

The College of health sciences has a dream of having a unique and excellent medical education curriculum which has strong emphasis on team and multi-disciplinary approach, and is responsive to the needs of the Nigeria population as well as meet international standards.

SYL Technologies has a dream of of revolutionizing the way teaching and learning is done in Africa ,providing a cheaper yet more efficient system using Information and Communication technology. With the collective dream of making the college the best learning vehicle it can be, the adoption of Information and communication technology is inevitable .

In the same vein, it is forseen that the relationship will be on-going and should extend well beyond the first version of the virtual class.

Therefore, the break down of the vison is provided below , evaluating where we are, and where we hope to get to in the next 10 years.

FIRST PHASE:

Version 1 ; The Virtual Class ( With Main Lecture Notes in form of texts. diagrams, a Test facility, an Index of Terms and a Feedback system.)

Version 2 ; Version 1 with lots of recorded videos and animated illustrations.

Version 3 ; Video streaming and broadcast and an actual creation of a Virtual class studio
in the institution, where real classes are captured.

Version 4 ; V-Net Virtual class enabled with a powerful Teacher
Administrative portal ( On-line submission of assignments, Chat room etc).

Version 5 ; Examination Simulation Studio ( real time tests and examination with
the teacher full autonomy employing customized models).

Version 6 ; Virtual Labs ( all praticals are taken on a computer with full
instructional videos enabled by software simulation of laboratory experiments.)

SECOND PHASE

Version 7 ; Holographic representation of an operation .However this is in the next half decade and it is dependent on an emergent technology still under much test right now but the power of the virtual learning will be highly augmented when an holographic representation of a human being is placed on a bed and a student can practice on it.

Version 8: Development of the School Mate device: a virtual electronic learning simulator and facilator that provide a close to real life learning experience with the use of a GSM like device with acompaning accessories like the heardset and goggles. The system will surfice with a dedicated two-way eduacatonal telecommunication network .

With the understanding that funds are required to execute this noble idea, The college thereby calls on interested investors and stakeholders to convince themselves for active participation in the project.

Without mincing words, the virtual class is the future of effective learning, expecially in the light of the impending explosion in the population of students.
