4 Academic Atmosphere
(a) Any policy adopted and practiced by the College/School/Faculty/Department in pursuit of academic standards and maintenance of academic atmosphere
External Examiners are invited for Final MB.ChB Examination in Surgery and Surgical Specialties
The Department organizes weekly Clinical Conferences, monthly Journal Club meeting, monthly Clinical Audit meeting, monthly Research meeting and quarterly Guest Lectures
Academic Staff are peer-reviewed for promotion
APPRAISAL: Appraise the entire academic staff of the Program/Sub-Discipline/Discipline.
(a) Adequate in number, qualification and experience (State average student to staff ratio)
The number of academic establishment in the department does not cover all the traditional sub-specialties in Surgery. Consequently the staffs on ground are overstretched. 3 lecturers at least need to be appointed into the following sub-specialties of Surgery; Neurosurgery, Plastic and Bums, Cardio-thoracic Surgery and at least 4 in each of Ear, Nose and Throat, (ENT) Ophthalmology, and Paediatric Surgery. General Surgery would require 8.
At each particular period we have between 160-190 Students at each course level in the department and that put the Staff/Student ratio at 1:26-33. The Lecturers are sound and fully qualified as they are all Fellows of recognized Postgraduate Medical Colleges. They have adequate teaching experience as evidenced by the pass rate of the Students as well as the quality products of our programme over the years.
(b) Effectiveness as Lecturers :Very Good
(c) Professional Achievements
All the Lecturers are Honorary Consultants to Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals Complex, Ile-Ife. Some are External Examiners to other Medical Schools and Postgraduate Medical Colleges. The feat of first Renal Transplantation to be undertaken by a Team of Indigenous Surgeons in any Public Institution in this Country was in this Department. Similarly the separation of Siamese twins was successfully carried out on 2 consecutive occasions recently in the Department.
