INTRODUCTION

The purpose of the Institute of Public Health (IPH) within the College of Health Sciences of the Obafemi Awolowo University is to; serve as a forum for generating ideas about health-development, health promotion and disease prevention programmes, in line with national health policy and priorities. The Institute is also serving as a Centre for planning, implementing, coordinating and evaluating multi-disciplinary research, service and training programmes. National Universities Commission (NUC) formally accredite IPII through a letter dated March 17th, 2000.

 

 

 

OBJECTIVES

The specific Objectives of the Institute are to:

(a) Serve as a Centre for collaborative and multi-disciplinary health research; solicit and attract support for essential public health research;

(b) Render public health services as may be required of the Institute by the College, the University and the Community;

(c) organize training courses, seminars, workshops, conferences and symposia, in various aspects of public health, for health workers; health administrators; health policy makers as demanded by governmental and non-governmental organizations, nationally and as a means of promoting health;

(d) Organize other collaborative health programme in the areas of research, service and training with interested agencies in and outside the country;

(e) Provide a forum for maximizing human and material- resources for health research, within the College, in particular and the University in general; coordinates all the health-related outreach programmes of the College.

 

 

 

 

DEPARTMENTS

The Institute is serving as a Centre for essential * research primary Health care services and training in various aspects of Public Health. The arc Applied Operations Research in each of the following programmes and in other related areas whenever considered necessary:

  • Epidemiology and Disease Control.
  • Environmental and Occupational Health.
  • Maternal and Child Health.
  • Nutrition
  • Health Education
  • Oral Health

 

 

PROGRAMS

Service Programmes

This involves:

  • Liaising with the Local, State or Federal Governments and assisting them to develop service and training programmes;
  • Working with government and non-government organizations in the areas of health promotion and disease prevention;
  • Initiating and sustaining outreach programmes in underserved areas

Training Programmes

The Institute is mandated to run programmes in the following areas: Seminars/Workshops/Conference on topical Public Health issues such for Primary Health Care Workers, Policy Makers and other cadres of health personnel.

Diploma Programmes in:

(a) Health Service Administration for Health Managers and Policy Makers.

(b) Occupational Health and Safely for Industrial health and safely

(c) Health System/Operations Research Methodology for Health Researchers and Policy (d) Health Education and Health Promotion for all cadres of Health workers

(e) Maternal and Child Health

(f) Community Health Nutrition; for health practitioners and others Oral Health Certificate Course

(h) Reproductive Health Service Delivery

(i) Adolescent & Youth Friendly Health Services

Major Activities

Research

  • Modification and Improvement of Traditional Weaning Diets funded by the University Research Committee. Prof. E.O. Ojofeitimi is the Principal Investigator. It led to the productions of Groundnut and Cowpea milks. The Research findings had also been disseminated published and a copy sent to University Research Committee who funded the Research. (2000)

 

  • Assessment of the Nutritional and Health Status of the elderly in Ife/Ijesha Area of Osun State . (Already completed). Dissemination of Research Finding done. The Principal Investigat.or is Prof. E. O. Ojofeitmj,(2001) .Funded by the University Research Committee.
