Department of Preventive Dentistry

 
 
 

 

OBJECTIVES

The Goal of the Department of Preventive and Community Dentistry is to lead the way in training, research and service in preventive and community dentistry at undergraduate, postgraduate, local, national and international levels.

The Objectives are to:

  1. provide quality oral and general health care service to the population with emphasis on prevention.
  2. train undergraduate and postgraduate students who will be able to function effectively in health care planning, service delivery, administration and research at local and international levels, and compete anywhere in the world with other graduates in the areas of Preventive and Community dentistry.  
  3. contribute significantly to research developments in preventive and community dentistry
  4. attain international recognition in research and service for the improvement of oral health and
offer advice to governments and other bodies in the area of preventive and public health/community dentistry, including policy formulation for health

ACADEMIC PROGRAMMES IN THE DEPARTMENT

 

(a) Bachelor of Dental Surgery (B.Ch.D) – This is based in the Faculty, but courses in Preventive and Community Dentistry, that is, Community Dentistry, Oral Medicine, Periodontology, and Ethics are taught from the Department.

(b) Residency training programmes in Community Dentistry, Oral Medicine and Periodontology. This is the pathway for training of Hospital Consultants and also lecturers/clinicians.

(c) Diploma in Oral Health Care in collaboration with the Institute of Public Health, College of Health Sciences and the Centre for Distance Learning, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife.

(c) Postgraduate Courses in Dental Public Health
Masters in Dental Public health (MDPH); Master of Science in Dental Public Health (MSc DPH); Doctor of Philosophy in Dental Public Health – PhD (DPH)

RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT ACTIVITIES

(a) Research Focus: The research focus in the department include;

(i)         Primary Health Care

(ii)        Emerging Infectious diseases such as HIV/AIDS

(iii)Prevention and management of Periodontal diseases focusing on recent developments

such as Guided Tissue regeneration, aetiology of gingival recession and other topical issues.

(iv)       Dental Education.
Members of the Department have contributed immensely to world literature in these fields.

SERVICE ACTIVITIES:  LOCAL, NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL

The Department has been rendering clinical services through the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals Complex. Conservative periodontal management procedures, periodontal flap procedures, and Guided Tissue Regeneration are among various routine clinical procedures in the Department. The Department has also been providing services to the local communities. It has established the first Dental clinic at the Local Government level in West Africa at Ipetumodu in Ife North Local Government as part of a Community Oral Health Project.

The Department has also been very active at the National level and contributes to the training of residents (postgraduate doctors/dentists) from other health institutions in the country.

At the International level, the department is represented on various bodies and a staff of the Department is a member of the WHO Global Task Force on Oral aspects of HIV/AIDS.

PLANS FOR THE FUTURE

The department intends to recruit staff and develop the other unit of Oral medicine. It will also strengthen the present training, research and services in Periodontology and Community dentistry.
The department also plans to introduce Oral and dental health into all the Local Governments in Nigeria using the Ife North Local Government project as a model.
