It was an eminent Nigerian who once remarked: "If you think education is costly, try ignorance." By now, I believe we are all convinced that education is the chief weapon with which to lift a society, especially a developing society from ignorance and poverty to a state of social, spiritual and material well being. Therefore, we consider it necessary to create, through the university instructional process, a core of young people who have an urge to alleviate human misery and who want to make their world a better place than they found it. We of the College of Health Sciences, Obafemi Awolowo University believe that education is for public good and thus our education strives to engender a sense of public service in our students and staff. We strive to equip and enable our graduates meet not only the employment requirements of the nation and the world at large, but also the challenges of principles higher than mere self-interest and self-fulfillment in a rapidly changing technological world.

Current trends in Education
We hasten to let you know that the current trends in the education sector in Nigeria calls for a more cordial relationship and co-operation with parents/guardians, university authorities and even the students themselves to be able to fulfill the glorious objectives of providing worthy and capable graduates of international standards. This calls for co-operation and sacrifice on the part of parents and guardians as one of the major stakeholders in Higher Education. We are facing an increasing number of problems that tend to militate against the fulfillment of our stated objectives. Government subvention to University Education has continued to dwindle over the years. Over 90% of the University revenue is spent on personnel to the detriment of other activities like academic programmes, staff development, municipal services etc. Above all, students population has continued to increase, yet a number of well qualified students still find it difficult to get admitted to the University and to the course of their choice. Furthermore, the cost of maintaining a student per session ha's increased tremendously. It is for these reasons that we need to come together, examine the problems militating against the general welfare and academic progress of your children/wards and the problems militating against our efforts at giving the high quality education which your children/wards deserve, with a view to jointly exploring solutions to the rather multifarious problems. The adage which says "united we stand divided we fall" is relevant in our case. Therefore, we would appreciate your personal attendance at the Parents' Consultative Forum.
