Department of Medical Rehabilitation

INTRODUCTION

The importance of rehabilitation was brought under the spotlight during and after the Nigerian Civil War when it became necessary to consider and effect the rehabilitation of wounded soldiers. The acute shortage of personnel in cadres of this arm of the National Health Care Delivery became obvious.

The Department of Medical Rehabilitation took off as one of the sub-divisions of the then Faculty of Health Sciences in 1977. The decision was to train graduates in Physical Therapy (PT) and Occupational (OT).
The purpose of the degree programme in PT and OT is:
i) to train rehabilitationists who would be able to interact effectively, in team
work, with patients in the indigenous environment and
ii) to respond to the need of leadership and teachers in these two cadres of Rehabilitation.

Initially, a four year degree programme in Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy, as two options, was embarked upon. This programme has been revised three times in order to meet the prevailing challenges. About 24 batches of graduates of Bachelor of Medical Rehabilitation (Physical Therapy) have been turned out. They have not only been of immense services in the hospital setting, they have also been occupied in industrial settings, rehabilitation centres, special schools, Armed forces, sports organization and fitness programmes.
The above diversification and the need to meet the National University Commission (NUC) minimum standard of training in physiotherapy made it mandatory for the programme to be revised and spread over five years. The Occupational Therapy programme was equally revised to cover five years including the Preliminary Year I. More cognitive knowledge in liberal arts and basic medical sciences, newer arts in PT and OT, computer literacy and high technical exposures are among the innovations in new five year programme for the two options

OBJECTIVES

This is a five (5) year programme of undergraduate training for basic Physical Therapists and Occupational Therapists. The concept of the programme in Medical Rehabilitation is a holistic one. It involves the treatment and training of the patient for normal living in the physical, psychological, social and vocational senses. Physical therapy entails the use of physical modalities (heat, light, sound, cold etc.) in a mechanically oriented milieu. The judicious use of exercise effects a better functioning of the musculoskeletal, cardiopulmonary and neuromuscular systems. Occupational therapy involves the utilization of constructive and manipulative activities as media for therapy. Emphasis is placed on the use of occupation to close the gap between disability and ability. In the pursuit of this goal, music, art, diverse industrial work, domestic activities, craft work and social activities are featured. Although there is a distinction between these two professions there are in fact many areas of overlap. It is hoped that the student studying towards the degree in Medical Rehabilitation will have the option to specialize in either Occupational Therapy or Physical Therapy during the programme. This will enable the student to be eligible for registration with the Medical Rehabilitation Therapists Board of Nigeria.
