FROM THE DESK OF THE PROVOST

The Obafemi Awolowo University, established in 1962, is one of Nigeria’s first generation universities. The College of Health Sciences (which started as the Faculty of Health Sciences in May 1972) runs undergraduate degree programmes in Medicine (MB.ChB), Dentistry (B.Ch.D), Medical Rehabilitation (B.M.R), and Nursing Science (B.N.Sc Nursing). The College also runs Postgraduate Programmes in the Basic Sciences, Community Health, Dental Public Health, Mental Health and Medicine for the clinical professional disciplines. Clinical programmes of teaching and research are based in a network of health care institutions consisting of Hospitals and Health Centres serving a population of over 1,000,000 in urban and rural settlements within the Ife-Ijesha zone of Osun State.

I acknowledge and pay obeisance to the visionary founding fathers who placed the College on a sound footing, and the Deans and Provosts who have not only sustained but, efficiently fortified the enduring legacy. The College is proud of the achievements of its staff, students and alumni. We have been enjoying tremendous cooperation and assistance from our numerous alumni, all over the world. The USA Alumni, for example, is currently working on the provision of additional transport facilities for our students. Individual members of the alumni have also assisted in such areas as Information Communication and Technology (ICT) infrastructure, teaching facilities, research equipment, and others. I am confident that with our collective efforts, we would be able to frontally confront current and emerging challenges and attain our goal of a better and improved College of Health Sciences.

The College of Health Sciences provides exceptionally high-quality education by creating scholarly environment that foster excellence in instructional delivery, research activities, compassionate patient care, community health care services, and health leadership. The College recognizes the inter and multi-disciplinary nature of health care delivery and thus seeks to operate curricula that will train health personnel who will be effective health team players as well as assume and play leadership roles in health care delivery. The College is conscious of the global trend and market for health care personnel and is therefore poised for the training of scientifically competent and internationally relevant professionals.

Although we have come this far from the inception of the College, human establishments being dynamic, there is bound to be new room for improvement and further development. I firmly believe with your support, progressive suggestions and commitment to our laudable mission, we will be able to meet these needs and communally move the College forward. back <<<
