INTRODUCTION

The Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences is one of the three faculties constituting the present College of Health Sciences . It was created in 1993, when the old Faculty of Health Sciences went Collegiate.

Progress
Poor financing that has been the scourge of the University in the past few years has hampered the development of the new Faculty. In spite of this, however, the following can be recorded as notable achievements in the recent past:

  • Additional Undergraduate Programmes: The University Planning and Development Committee has recently approved additional establishment for the Department of Medical Rehabilitation to recruit qualified academic staff for the commencement of Occupational Therapy Degree Programme, the first of its kind in Nigeria .
  • Year 2001 Nigerian Universities Postgraduate Thesis Award Scheme (NUPTAS): The Ph.D. Thesis of a Faculty member was one of the five theses selected as the best all over the country by the National Universities Commission (NUC) for the Year 2001 NUPTAS. The candidate is Dr. B. R. Fajemilehin, Reader in Nursing Sciences.
  • (i) Patterns and Extent of Self-medication Practices in Ile-Ife.
    (ii) Health and Social Welfare of the Elderly
  • Most of our graduates have received National Merit Awards during their NYSC
  • (i) The department is also embarking on Bachelor of Nursing Science on Distant Learning basis (Part-time).
    (ii) Professional Diploma in Nursing Administration and Management has been developed in conjunction with Department of Management and Accounting as well as the Institute of Public Health.
  • The department is the only Nursing Department in all the Universities offering Nursing at degree level that had full accreditation from National University Commission (NUC) in Nigeria between 1990 and 1999.

DEPARTMENTS

The Faculty is made up of eight Departments:

* Two of the departments, Nursing Sciences and Medical Rehabilitation, offer Degree Courses in Nursing and Physiotherapy at Undergraduate and Postgraduate levels.

 

 

PROGRAMS

Service Programmes

This involves:

  • Liaising with the Local, State or Federal Governments and assisting them to develop service and training programmes;
  • Working with government and non-government organizations in the areas of health promotion and disease prevention;
  • Initiating and sustaining outreach programmes in underserved areas

Training Programmes

The Institute is mandated to run programmes in the following areas: Seminars/Workshops/Conference on topical Public Health issues such for Primary Health Care Workers, Policy Makers and other cadres of health personnel.

Diploma Programmes in:

(a) Health Service Administration for Health Managers and Policy Makers.

(b) Occupational Health and Safely for Industrial health and safely

(c) Health System/Operations Research Methodology for Health Researchers and Policy (d) Health Education and Health Promotion for all cadres of Health workers

(e) Maternal and Child Health

(f) Community Health Nutrition; for health practitioners and others Oral Health Certificate Course

(h) Reproductive Health Service Delivery

(i) Adolescent & Youth Friendly Health Services

Major Activities

Research

  • Modification and Improvement of Traditional Weaning Diets funded by the University Research Committee. Prof. E.O. Ojofeitimi is the Principal Investigator. It led to the productions of Groundnut and Cowpea milks. The Research findings had also been disseminated published and a copy sent to University Research Committee who funded the Research. (2000)

 

  • Assessment of the Nutritional and Health Status of the elderly in Ife/Ijesha Area of Osun State . (Already completed). Dissemination of Research Finding done. The Principal Investigat.or is Prof. E. O. Ojofeitmj,(2001) .Funded by the University Research Committee.
