OGUNBODEDE WANTS OAU TO BE A MODEL IN DANCE

The Obafemi Awolowo University as an institution renowned for learning and culture should be taking the lead in dance as part of its commitment to fulfilling its cultural objectives.

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ogunbodede made this submission at the 5th Annual National Conference of the Association of Dance Scholars and Practitioners of Nigeria (ADSPON), with the theme:Dance as Therapy for National Security and Economics Stability, hosted by the Department of Dramatic Arts.

In his address of welcome, Professor Ogunbodede said, “it’s a privilege for OAU to host this years’ annual national conference of ADSPON”, saying the power of dance can be used to put some of our issues on the right path, psychologically, emotionally, physically and intellectual so as to bring economic growth and stability.

The Vice-Chancellor, however challenged the audience that focus should not only be on the academic aspect of dance but also on “showing the joy and interest in it and the physical improvement it brings humans’ health”, adding that it is a multi-billion naira industry if it can be fully implemented.
While calling on the Department of Dramatic Arts to make dance something of interest to people, the OAU helmsman promised changes to the Pit Theatre of the department, saying the department can always count on the support of his administration.

“I want to challenge you to come up with something that will make people create an interest in dance, to get to know about dancing, and also over and beyond this administration, you have people you can leverage on.” “We are also already discussing to see what can be done concerning this Pit Theatre, so that next time we will be meeting here, we will be in an improved Pit Theatre.”

The event which saw students from various institutions across the country in attendance, also had the Special Adviser to the Governor of State of Osun on Culture and Tourism, Hon. (Mrs.) Taiwo Oluga, in attendance as well as other guests within and outside the University.
