Faculty of Pharmacy Holds Seminar

Title: Undergraduate Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D) Degree Programme: A Paradigm Shift
Speaker: Prof. Wilson O Erhun; FNAPharm Dean, Faculty of Pharmacy, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife.
Date: Thursday, 31st August 2017
Time: 4.00 pm
Venue: Room B217A Lecture Theatre, New Faculty of Pharmacy Building, OAU, Ile Ife.

Presently the Faculty of Pharmacy, Obafemi Awolowo University is running an approved five year Bachelor of Pharmacy (B.Pharm) degree programme. This is the minimum requirement for registration to practise as Pharmacist in Nigeria. However, the National Universities Commission (NUC) recently approved a six year Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D) degree programme for Nigerian Universities. The West African Health Organization had much earlier approved a harmonized curriculum for the same degree in ECOWAS countries. This presentation will take a comparative look at the present OAU B.Pharm curriculum and the NUC approved Benchmark and Minimum Academic Standard for Pharm.D programme. The extent to which the structures currently used in running the B.Pharm programme can cope with the new programme will be appraised with particular reference to the available teaching and research facilities. The response of the Pharmacists Council of Nigeria in floating a special one year Pharm.D programme for Academic Staff of Nigerian Universities will be critically appraised. Also, how the premier Faculty of Pharmacy in Nigeria should respond to this change will be articulated while giving ample opportunity for cross fertilization of ideas.
